University of Wisconsin-Madison - Postdoctoral Positions in Optical / Radio Survey Science

The University of Wisconsin–Madison invites applications for two postdoc positions in optical / radio survey science to begin in Fall 2024. We particularly welcome applications from candidates with research interests in the following areas:

(1) Cosmology with early data from the Vera C. Rubin Observatory. The successful candidate will collaborate with members of the Legacy Survey of Space and Time Dark Energy Science Collaboration (LSST DESC) on studies of dark energy, dark matter, neutrino properties, and physics of the early Universe. The ideal candidate will take full advantage of the opportunity to work directly with the Rubin Observatory Project Commissioning Team contributing to science validation activities using on-sky commissioning data.

(2) Data intensive radio astronomy. The successful candidate will develop software pipelines and data products for the ongoing Very Large Array Sky Survey (VLASS) – a high resolution, near all sky, 3GHz continuum survey. A major aspect of the project will be combining data from multiple observing epochs of the survey. Experience with radio interferometry images and measurement sets, as well as software packages such as CASA (or equivalent), are essential for this position. The ideal candidate will enhance existing research interests at UW-Madison in extragalactic radio astronomy, which include cosmology with strongly lensed radio sources and the evolution of radio galaxies.

The initial postdoctoral appointments are for two years, renewable up to three years. Applicants should have completed a PhD before the anticipated start date in Fall 2024.

To apply, please upload a cover letter, curriculum vitae, and brief statement of research interests here. You will be asked to provide the contact information for three individuals who can separately send letters of recommendation. The position will remain open until filled; however applicants are strongly encouraged to submit all materials (and to ensure that the three letters of recommendation are received) by 15 December 2023. Inquiries regarding the position should be directed to Keith Bechtol (kbechtol@wisc.edu).

UW–Madison is an equal opportunity/affirmative action employer. We promote excellence through diversity and encourage all qualified individuals to apply.
